El Carmen - Guatemala - H3
Farm - El Carmen
Varietal - H3
Process - Shade Dried Natural
Flavours - Cherry, Almond, Chocolate
This is my second year buying coffee from Javier at Caribbean Goods. I had the pleasure of meeting in person at World of Coffee this summer and it was great to chat and share ideas. He is a real gentleman, focussed on a great product and working with people in the right way. He also has some of the best Guatemalan coffee!
This is a delicious coffee. Not overly complex, but in a great way, easy to drink and full of comfort! Rich mouthfeel, light cherry acidity and a deep chocolatey body. This coffee is a pleasure at any time of day. Solid as an espresso and brilliant as filter!

Juan Jose Mejia, son of Jose and grandson of don Mateo, took the reins of the farm when his father passed away in 1980, inheriting his part of the land which he named El Carmen. Focusing ever more on quality, planting new varietals such as yellow Catuai, Tekisik, and Gesha, Juan Jose and Finca El Carmen were awarded numerous times at national competitions in recognition for its outstanding cup quality. In the early 2010’s, Don Hector Leal acquires El Carmen from Juan Jose, and continues with his vision to produce some of the best quality coffee in the country, starting the process of completely replanting the farm with new varietals which include Ethiopian Dwarf, Pink Bourbon, and Chiroso, to name a few.
Javier was fortunate to meet Maris Leal and Daniel Skineer-Klee. Maris is the granddaughter of Don Hector Leal and currently manages the farm with her husband, Daniel. Their collaboration appears seamless, and their dedication to exceptional quality is evident. Maris has also judged coffees at ANACAFE (The Guatemalan Coffee Association), and together with Daniel, they have three lovely children.
